The announcement came
following the release of a video that purportedly showed a Planned Parenthood
executive discussing the removal of body parts. The footage was recorded and
released by anti-abortion group The Center for Medical Progress (CMP).
It was filmed in secret at
a Los Angeles restaurant by actors posing as buyers from a human biologics
company, the group said in a release.
The Planned Parenthood official, identified by CMP as Dr Deborah
Nucatola, is heard describing in detail the procedures used to procure foetus
organs.
“I’d say a lot of people want liver. And for that reason, most
providers will do this case under ultrasound guidance, so they’ll know where
they’re putting their forceps,” Dr Nucatola said.
She added:“We’ve been very good at getting heart, lung, liver,
because we know that, so I’m not going to crush that part, I’m going to
basically crush below, I’m going to crush above, and I’m going to see if I can
get it all intact.”
Dr Nucatola was also heard discussing pricing, saying each
specimen can garner between $30 and $100.
Federal law prohibits the sale or purchase of human body parts
in the United States. Tissue donation is permitted if the woman undergoing the
abortion gives consent.
The footage was quickly
circulated online and Planned Parenthood issued a statement saying the video
was the work of a “well-funded group established for the purpose of damaging
Planned Parenthood’s mission and services”.
