The House of
Representatives has called for an international investigation into the tragedy
that occurred during this year’s holy pilgrimage in Saudi Arabia. Meanwhile, the Senate is to set up an ad-hoc committee
which will investigate the incident and report back to them. Both motions were passed unanimously
in both chambers In the National
Assembly, Federal Lawmakers called for explanations. While in the Senate, a point of order was raised by the Deputy
Leader of the Senate. Sen. Bala ibn
Na’Allah moved that those who were still alive should be provided adequate
treatment, while the Saudi Arabian Government must ensure that such occurrence
is forestalled. A minute silence was
also observed in the House of Representatives for the dead moving the motion, Hon. Nnanna Igbokwe, lamented the number of
Nigerians who lost their lives in the incident. He called for an international investigation into the matter to
prevent future occurrences. The
National Haji Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON) confirmed the death of 54
Nigerians in the deadly stampede in Mina, Saudi Arabia, during this year’s
Hajj. The Chairman of NAHCON, Mr. Abdullah
Mohammed, said that 42 out of the 54 that died were from states Pilgrims
Welfare Board including two NAHCON officials, while others were among those on
the pilgrimage by private tour operators.
