US Actor Danny Glover in Nigeria to Star in Movie About Ebola

U.S. actor Danny Glover said on Thursday he will be in Nigeria to star in a movie based on people who risked and sacrificed their lives to stop the spread of Ebola in Africa's most populous country. Glover said he is proud to take part in the film, called "93 Days," because of the achievements made by the real-life characters. Nigerian actress Bimbo Akintola will portray Dr. Stella Ameyo Adadevoh, who along with her team diagnosed the first Ebola case in Nigeria. Adadevoh put the patient under quarantine, and stubbornly refused to discharge the Liberian man who was sick with the infection despite pressure. Adadevoh eventually died along with three other hospital staff that had contracted the disease.
Her actions ensured that the fast-spreading viral infection was quickly contained. Glover will portray the director of the hospital where Adadevoh worked.  Akintola said the movie is a story of how Nigeria— a country where many institutions have weakened due to endemic corruption and ethnic strife — triumphed over the spread of Ebola, which ravaged her West African neighbors of Guinea, Sierra-Leone and Liberia "Nigerians acted as one. There was nothing about you being from different ethnicity or different political party, it was about Nigerians just standing up and doing this incredible thing for Nigeria," Akintola said. She said the movie will be about courage in the face of death.

"The doctors at First Consult (hospital) didn't ask for an Ebola patient. They weren't expecting it. But they stood up to the plate when it turned out the patient had Ebola. No one run away. That is courage in the face of death," Akintola said. About 12,000 people fly out of Nigeria daily to different corners of the globe, Akintola said, adding that an Ebola outbreak in Nigeria would have had a devastating effect on the world. According to the World Health Organization, news of the first Ebola case in Nigeria on July 23 last year rocked public health communities all around the world. "Nigeria is Africa's most populous country and its newest economic powerhouse. For a disease outbreak, it is also a powder keg. The number of people living in Lagos — around 21 million — is almost as large as the populations of Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone combined," WHO said last year in a publication about the outbreak.

Lagos also is characterized by a large population living in crowded and unsanitary conditions in many slums, it said. Thousands of people move in and out of Lagos, Africa's largest city, every day, constantly looking for work or markets for their products in a busy metropolis with frequent traffic gridlocks, said WHO, adding that officials were worried how they would manage to trace people who had come into contact with persons infected with Ebola in order place them in isolation. "The last thing anyone in the world wants to hear is the two words, 'Ebola' and 'Lagos' in the same sentence," said WHO, quoting Jeffrey Hawkins, the United States Consul General in Nigeria at the time.

Inflexion Gets £100m Taste For Yo! Sushi

The owner of the fashion chain Jack Wills is in talks to buy Yo! Sushi, the UK's biggest Japanese restaurant group, for about £100m. Sky News understands that Inflexion Private Equity has in recent weeks emerged as the frontrunner to buy the company, which trades from more than 70 sites in the UK.
Yo! Sushi has cashed in on the growing popularity of Japanese cuisine in the UK, now employing well over 1,500 people and expanding internationally into Europe, the Middle East and the US. A deal between Inflexion and Quilvest, Yo! Sushi's current owner is not yet certain and could fall apart, insiders said on Friday. However, the private equity firm is understood to have been given a period of exclusivity within which to negotiate a deal.
It is said to have seen off competition from rival bidders which were reported to have included 3i, Morgan Stanley Private Equity and Mistral Equity Partners, a New York-based fund. Yo! Sushi was founded in 1997 by Simon Woodroffe, who was one of the original participants on the BBC's Dragons' Den programme. More recently, the company has been run by Vanessa Hall, who is spearheading its international growth plans.
The prospective sale of Yo! Sushi comes during a frenetic period of deal making in the UK restaurants sector. Last month, Cote, the French bistro chain, was taken over by BC Partners, a buyout firm, at a valuation which surprised many City observers. BC is understood to believe that there is scope to triple the number of Cote outlets in the UK, despite the growth of rival operators. Among the other chains which have changed hands or launched sale processes in the last few months are Ask, La Tasca, Las Iguanas, Prezzo and TGI Friday's. An Inflexion spokesman declined to comment, while Canaccord Genuity, which has been running the sale process for Quilvest, could not be reached.

Whoopi Goldberg tells Cara Delevingne to suck it up: 'She's not famous. I'M famous

Whoopi Goldberg had some tough words for Cara Delevingne after the actress clashed with three US news anchors in a now infamous interview on a US daytime television show. Delevingne appeared on Good Day Sacramento via video link to promote her new film, Paper Towns,  and was accused of being “tired”, “irritated” and “in a mood” by the anchors (one of who introduced her as 'Carla') after giving hostile responses. She was eventually sent off air and told to “take a nap” as she muttered "too far" under her breath. The interview has been debated across the world, with sides split between the trite questions she was asked and the sarcastic answers she gave. Goldberg made her feelings clear on the matter when one of her panelists on ABC’s The View defended Delavigne, telling the 22-year-old: “Suck. It. Up”.

U.S.A. Beats Germany, 2-0, Advancing to Final

The United States national team beat Germany, 2-0, on Tuesday night in Montreal to return to the Women’s World Cup final.
The Americans, who won two of the first three World Cups but lost the 2011 title game to Japan, dominated the Germans from start to finish. Carli Lloyd scored on a second-half penalty after Germany missed one, and then fed Kelley O’Hara for a clinching score in the 84th minute.
The Americans will play the winner of Wednesday’s second semifinal — Japan vs. England — in Sunday’s final in Vancouver.
Lloyd, a feisty New Jersey native who delivered the winning goal in the Americans’ quarterfinal win over China on Friday, was the difference again. Freed to roam forward by Coach Jill Ellis for the second game in a row, she did just that: teasing, fighting, scrapping and in the end, scoring.
Her penalty kick in the 69th minute probably should not have been a penalty at all — replays showed Alex Morgan was fouled just outside the area and then fell in — but she buried it in the side netting for her third goal in three games.
Her score came less than 10 minutes after Germany’s Celia Sasic, the tournament scoring leader with six goals, pulled a penalty kick wide left. Again, the United States had a little luck; Julie Johnston, who had committed the foul that conceded the penalty, could have been red-carded on the play but was not.
Instead, the game turned a few minutes later, just as the tournament has turned in the past two games for Ellis and her newly confident team. The Americans struggled in their early performances in the tournament, playing defensively, but have broken out with some tactical changes that resulted in two straight starts on the bench for the veteran striker Abby Wambach.

Lost in the win was another fine performance by the United States defense. Hope Solo recorded her fifth straight shutout, and the United States extended its goalless streak to 513 minutes — dating to a first-half score by Australia in their tournament opener.

Surveillance Court Rules That N.S.A. Can Resume Bulk Data Collection

The Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court ruled late Monday that the National Security Agency may temporarily resume its once-secret program that systematically collects records of Americans’ domestic  phone calls in bulk.

The program had lapsed on June 1, when a law on which it was based, Section 215 of the U.S.A. Patriot Act, expired. Congress revived that provision on June 2 with a bill called the U.S.A. Freedom Act, which said that the provision could only be used for bulk collection for six months .
The six-month period was intended to give intelligence agencies time to move to a new system in which the phone records would stay in the hands of phone companies, though the agency could still gain access to them.

Shortly before Congress passed the U.S.A. Freedom Act, the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit, in New York, ruled that Section 215 could not legitimately be interpreted as permitting bulk collection at all.

Congress did not add anything to the bill contradicting the Second Circuit ruling, leaving it unclear whether the program could resume in the interim. As soon as President Obama signed the bill, his administration applied to restart the program for six months.
In a 26-page opinion Judge Michael W. Mosman said that the Second Circuit was wrong and that the program could resume.

“Second Circuit rulings are not binding on the F.I.S.C., and this court respectfully disagrees with that court’s analysis, especially in view of the intervening enactment of the U.S.A. Freedom Act,” he wrote.
In any event, Judge Mosman added, the passage of the bill was evidence that Congress had intended to allow bulk collection to continue for six months.
Judge Mosman, who normally serves in the Federal District Court for the District of Oregon when not serving on the spy court, also rejected a challenge to the program by Ken Cuccinelli, the former attorney general of Virginia, who said that it was illegal.
